Brief Note on the Environmentalists Society

 

  1. Background
  1. NGO registered in 1986
  2. With 350 members. Women form 52% of total membership.
  3. About 50% of its membership are graduates of the Institute of Environmental Studies with M.Sc. Degrees.
  4. The main office is in Khartoum but has branches in major towns like Atbara, Dongola, Wad Medeni, Sennar etc.

 

  1. Main Objectives of the Society;
  1. Raise environmental awareness.
  2. Design and implement environmentally sustainable development projects where the local communities play a major role in implementation and eventual take over.
  3. Carry out research to improve understanding of the causes of environmental problems.
  4. Advocacy, lobby and training on issues related to human rights, the rights, of citizens to live in healthy environment and raise awareness regarding these rights.

 

  1. Organizational Structure
  2. The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body. It elects the executive committee of ten members.
  3. The executive committee is composed of

  1. Sample of Work Conducted:
    1. Several workshops and seminars.
    2. Implemented a project with local communitiese.g. Poverty alleviation of small-scale farmers in Butana area.
    3. Recycling of :
    1. Plastic waste.
    2. Lead and lead oxide waste from buttery industries. (Pending funding)

3- Research on women food venders and designed a project to respond to their needs.

Water harvesting in the dry lands of Sennar – South central Sudan (pending funding)

Environmental impact assessment of Sabaloga Slaughter house.

Short training courses for NGOs on project preparation, PRA methodologist and how to raise local community’s environmental awareness and capacity building.

Lobby and advocacy on various environmental issues.

ICDP+5 on women and health (on going.

Gender net working (on going)

Strategic plan for:

    1. Environmentalist society to be updated.
    2. Women and desertification in Sudan – El Obeid 1997.
